The Institute of Theoretical and Applied Informatics (IITiS PAN) in Gliwice, Poland is a research institute of Polish Academy of Sciences, conducting advanced studies in computer science, information technologies, and networked systems, with a strong focus on theoretical foundations and practical applications in areas such as artificial intelligence, distributed systems, quantum computing, and wireless communications.
We joined PACK to use our knowledge on energy-efficient IoT communication and distributed AI algorithms in practice, to help facilitate effective transportation of goods through the borders and increase the security of trans-border logistics.
IITiS PAN coordinates the scientific dissemination and develops the communication architecture between sensors, mobile gateway and cloud infrastructure. IITiS PAN will also work on the detection algorithms realized as a distributed intelligence, to maximize accuracy of cargo bay monitoring, taking into account the energy efficiency.
We participate within the agile work environment, joining the cross-functional product teams. We concentrate on research problems, using available data and simulation models to represent the designated PACK architecture and solve the problems in making it efficient.
We bring into the project know-how and software framework to evaluate the merge of optimization, wireless communication and AI algorithms by joining discrete event simulation with system-level optimization in Python. We also share with the project our methods on embedding the AI classification methods on IoT devices.
IITiS PAN supposes that the PACK project will make the trans-border logistics more efficient thanks to the application of an energy-efficient IoT system in the trailers and containers. This will demonstrate practical application of our research results on AI algorithms applied in distributed IoT systems.
Future vision – How PACK connects to your organisation’s future plans.
PACK is a showcase of IITiS PAN competences in embedding the AI algorithms in advanced ICT infrastructure for logistics and manufacturing processes. It is later used as a platform for services related to asset tracking, data analysis and using AI to automate the logistics.

Krzysztof is an experienced researcher and leader of R&D projects. He is the author of over 120 research papers in journals and conference proceedings and the inventor of 3 patents granted by USPTO. His research is oriented on performance evaluation of networking protocols and mechanisms for autoconfiguration and optimization of wireless networks. Krzysztof is using discrete-event simulations and mathematical analysis to find optimal parameters and algorithms for wireless access points and base station. He worked also on network management systems and its software architecture.

Mert Nakip is a computer scientist and researcher, who holds assistant professor (adiunkt) position and works within the Security, Modelling and Performance Evaluation Group. He completed his PhD in computer science in 2024 at IITiS PAN, with a dissertation focused on self-supervised online learning methods for intrusion detection in secure Internet-of-Things systems. His work focuses mainly on the intersection of machine learning, cybersecurity, and networked systems, especially intrusion detection systems for IoT networks, online and federated machine learning methods, modeling and performance evaluation of communication networks and detection and mitigation of cyberattacks such as botnets or DoS attacks

Krzysztof Czarnecki is part of the scientific staff of IITiS PAN. He is pursuing a PhD in wireless networks’ performance. His role as an assistant researcher involves participation in research projects, software development, and scientific collaboration within the institute’s research groups. His research is oriented on computer networks and distributed systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning and cybersecurity.

Kitti holds an MSc degree in international defence and security policy, has ongoing studies in engineering management, thus mixing technical and strategic expertise into her work. She started her career at the Hungarian Ministry of Defence as a security policy analyst, focusing on threat assessment, policy recommendations, and strategic decision-making. She has worked for SFC as a researcher and manager of security projects since 2023. In PACK, she fills in the role of general manager for the whole project, and coordinates day to day operation of the consortium while also serving as point of contact and internal project manager of SFC, with the exception of CDE activities which remains in the hand of her colleague Orsolya (CM of PACK).
